Hans Krüger, a German army officer, must conceal his love for Aimée Ferrand, a beautiful young French woman of Jewish descent whose family he has heard about his entire life. Their fathers, though once enemy combatants, are friends having met one another in No Man's Land during the spontaneous Christmas Truce of World War One. When Hans and Aimée meet for the first time in 1940 during the Nazi occupation of France, they could not have envisioned the course of events that would ensue as Europe spirals into the abyss of global conflict. With World War Two raging and the deportation of Jews escalating, Hans learns Aimée and her entire family are intended for arrest and deportation. In response, he executes a daring and courageous plan to rescue them from the fatal grip of the Gestapo, a plan enacted against all odds and borne of selfless love.

I have to say the reviews sort of gave me this extremely high expectation. While I did enjoy the book and the relationships between the two families, parts of the story sort of dragged a bit. Maybe since I read so many WW II books, there were not as many surprises for me as for others that have enjoyed this book so much. I didn't find anything new in the basic story line. Yes, it was amazing that two people spanning so much time could remain friends for so long. Families and relationships can often bind unlikely friends. I gave this book four stars but, I don't know, maybe three plus for me. Maybe it was just a let down for me as I just expected so much and found most of this repeated in differing ways in other stories that took away some of its impact and made me want to skim a bit. I am not saying this not a good book, I am just saying that amazing would be an overstatement. There were some very nice moments, so I have to say if your considering the book buy it, but keep your feet on the ground and don't expect as much as some rating might suggest... just my opinion, nothing personal...Product details

The Ledger eBook Lloyd Holm Reviews
This book was very interesting and exciting from beginning to the end. The story depicts a terrible time in European history and tells of the struggle that decent Germans had to endure.
The love story is endearing and always welcome to the reader.
I ordered this book for my husband for Christmas and started reading it myself because I love historical novels. It grabbed me right away, so much so, that I ordered the version for my smart phone so I could continue reading anywhere.
The author uses a seamless blend of real historical events to create a terrific and captivating story. For those who aren't "history buffs" he does an excellent job of refeshing your memory on WWI and WWII without it reading like a dry lecture. Great book!!
This was an interesting and thought provoking book that highlighted the fears of Jews during the build up of the Nazis between World Wars 1 and 2, to the eventual end of hostilities and subsequent peace. It held me spellbound for most of the time, and was a well researched story.
It brought back vivid memories of stories that my mom (a Jewess who married out of her faith) told us, as she related her fears for her three children all born during the war. Highly recommended!
This was a really good story well written and kept you wanting to read to see what happens next. I really appreciate that this had a lot of factual history in it I learned more about WWI and WWII?. The timeline or location of the history has been modified in some cases to make the flow of the story better but is still factual history.
"The Ledger" starts out with a french grandfather, Andre, telling his recently engaged daughter and her fiancee about his experiences during World War I, and how he developed a lasting friendship with German soldier, Konrad Kruger, in 1914 during a Christmas Eve truce. Mr. Holm continues with letters back and forth between the two men as they settle into their married lives and raise their children through the rise of Hitler and the start of the second World War. Mr. Kruger's sons are in the German army and one of his sons, Hans, goes to France where he falls in love with Andre's daughter Aimee, who unbeknownst to her is half Jewish. The book become convoluted and improbable. Hans and Aimee write letters that conveniently slip past censors, and in actuality would have gotten both of them killed straight away. Hans visits with her and her family during the war years and everyone one in the town where Aimee lives is very tolerant, in fact quite nice to this uniformed German soldier. The French despised the German army occupying their towns. There would have been severe reprisals against Aimee for "collaborating" with the enemy. It was a sweet story, but that's all it was, a story.
The Christmas Peace of 1941 makes a fascinating background for the plot of this book. Two men who became friends and were on opposite sides of the fight made for fascinating reading, as their children come to know and love each other. The idea of using letters to tell the story is clever. I also learned information about that time period, and contrary to what I thought, all Germans in the army were not Nazis!
I love the book, so far. I would like to know if there is an update. In the middle of reading it changed to only one page being visible. The page that is showing cannot be scrolled up or down so I cannot read the lower portion of the page. I can see it goes on like this, in another view, for a while. I'd like to finish reading the story, very good story. Thanks.
